Elaine was the secretary for a middle school Principal in a pristine rocky mountain town when a new middle school was built to accommodate the town’s growing school-age population. The building was beautiful, with new carpets, new floors, and state-of-the-art everything. But Elaine was getting sick.
Starting with migraine headaches that became more and more severe, she developed debilitating muscle aches, joint pain, and loss of concentration. She would get better over the weekend, and much worse on returning to work. And she was not the only one. Jill, the secretary who sat next to her was even worse, and no one knew why.
The Principal took these women’s health deterioration seriously, and had the building inspected and tested. It turned out that a flaw in the “state-of-the-art” ventilation system had directed the air from the janitor’s closet (where all the toxic cleaning supplies were stored) directly over the secretary’s station.
Elaine left the school and began a two-year process of detoxification. She stuck to a strict high-fiber, low chemical diet. She exercised daily and avoided all synthetic chemicals. And she got better. Today, Elaine’s chemical sensitivities mean she still can’t pump her own gas or wear perfume, but she otherwise lives a normal and healthy life.
